At DMV BARISTA, we're on a mission to help coffee shops turn every coffee cup into a story and every connection into a shared narrative. Founded by Keoni Toman, our community-driven platform, spanning from Northern Virginia to the DC metro area, celebrates the fostering of genuine connections through coffee and community.

Our Story

"Sonder — noun. the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own."

Keoni Toman started at a small coffee shop a mile from his home. “I did not really like coffee at the time, but needed some extra cash” - Keoni. After some time he ended up falling in love with coffee. Not only coffee itself, but everything surrounding it: the community, the people. After that shop had closed down, he went on to work in various shops in the Northern Virginia area. “I've been living and breathing coffee ever since.”

Keoni Toman started DMV BARISTA as a space that fosters human connection and community. Coffee is a powerful driver in our world today and the cafe has supported people through the toughest of times. The community relies on local cafes to be a daily go to space. They count on the people that serve them. “I wouldn't be where I am today without coffee and all the people I've had the absolute pleasure of getting to know.” Keoni loves when he is one the "first" people to know the treasures within a customers’ lives. "I'm pregnant", "I got a promotion", "I'm getting divorced", "My wife has cancer". Any service worker can experience a wide range of emotions on any given day.

I know partially it's because I have no connection to their personal lives, but I still believe there has to be some trust in all that.
